RHETORICAL & CRITICAL APPROACHES TO PUBLIC RELATIONS

THE RHETORICAL TRADITION
WRANGLE IN THE MARKETPLACE

ROBERT L. HEATH

In his article Robert L. Heath talks about how public relations can have an ever-evolving meaning depending solely upon the perspective of the audience. He establishes the significance of rhetoric in context of public relations and how the practitioners in the industry can employ rhetoric in an ethical manner. To arrive at this claim Heath explains to us the 'Pillars of Public Relations Theory' using the Systems theory, Rhetorical theory, and Critical studies approach. Consequently, Heath's "rhetorical perspective" helps us in realizing that people interpret information through advocacy and this advocacy is dialogic, a contest among multiple voices [giving fair chances for everyone to be heard]. Overall, the success of Heath's essay lies in his unconventional way of linking rhetoric to public relations and employing the former as a way of ensuring ethical flow of message.

PERSPECTIVES ON PUBLIC RELATIONS HISTORY

RON PEARSON

Pearson's rhetorical and critical scholarship in public relations has inspired many souls. He illustrated that even accounts of history come with embedded values and rhetorical choices. In his essay on PR history he incorporates ideas from key authors including Hiebert, Pimlott, Tedlow, Smythe, and Olasky thus providing a diversely convincing worldview of the PR industry. For Pearson, PR was a deep-rooted idea originating from the work of one of the founding figures, Ivy Lee. In his essay, Pearson discusses a lot about Lee's understanding of the PR industry and how he [Lee] always stood up for enlightening the public with reality. The essay further explores how contemporary mass media is the main channel for constructing popular reality, which at times can be accurate or distorted. Thus, the success of Pearson's essay lies in his genuine explanation of the PR concepts and an impactful exposure of the manipulative corporate (or mass media)
tactics.

CIVIL SOCIETY AS A RHETORICAL PUBLIC RELATIONS PROCESS

MAUREEN TAYLOR

Taylor's essay on civil society and its interconnection to rhetoric and public relations serves an interesting idea of how public relations can aid toward civil society interests. A civil society is one that includes citizens linked by common interests and collective activity and at the heart of civil society is discourse (Taylor, 2009). Thus, active communication among the members of the community can help to increase participation. In such a situation what happens is, if some egocentric groups try to float biased messages through the use of money, power, or media ownership, then other organizations can shun them down to put forth interests serving the whole community. The success of Taylor's essay is mainly achieved by her innovative introduction of the "Civil Society Partners" which includes societal institutions, media, NGOs, business community, and international organizations.

"If I was down to my last dollar, I would spend it on public relations."
